He hadn’t slept much, but thankfully Judy had. He sat on the edge of her rumpled queen-size bed and watched her put on the last of her makeup in the mirror above her cool little dressing table. In fact, the whole apartment was cool. Which managed to make him feel even worse.

She glanced at Belle as she slicked on her mascara, mouth open as seemed to be de rigueur for this feminine operation. “Ah oo okay?”

“What? Oh, yes. I’m fine. Much better now that you’re here.”

She lowered the mascara wand. “You seem distracted.”

Judy knew him too well. “Sorry. For one thing, it seems the whole manufacturing operation for my new product is going to hell, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“Well, that’s the shits. You put your soul into that product.”

“Yes.” He scratched his ear. “But now it’s a competitor, so I guess I should be happy that they’re having problems.”

“Wow. That is tough. Of course, from what I’ve seen of Beauty, Inc., there’s not much chance one product is going to rock its foundations.”

He forced a smile. “Shouldn’t you be apprising me of my legal responsibilities?”

“Not until I pass the New York bar.” She glanced at him. “So the packaging is the problem?”

“Yes. I know it will work. I tested it. Dammit. This is crazy-making.”

“I’ll bet.” She drew on some lipstick. “I’m very impressed with Beauty, Inc., Belle. Imagine doing something like this for a stranger.” She pressed her lips together. “They really must want to make you happy.”

He leaned back on his elbows. “You know, I might have agreed with you a week ago, but now I honestly think they’re just that caring.” Heat pressed behind his eyes, and he sat up and looked at his phone so she wouldn’t notice.

She did. “Want to tell me what’s going on in your heart of hearts?”

“I’m not completely sure. But I do know I asked my family for help and got nothing. I asked Magnus Strong for help and got far more than I dreamed of handed to me with nothing asked in return.”

“Nothing?”

“They haven’t even asked me to sign a nondisclosure. Jesus, they trust me.”

“Who wouldn’t?”

He looked up at her crinkly, smiling eyes and halo of red curls. “Usually not a competitor.”

“But that’s the point, isn’t it? They don’t treat you like a competitor, so you don’t act like one. They’re giving me a place to live, a job that has an actual salary, and my medical care. Crap, I’ll work for this company until my brain bleeds. They’re going to have to tell me to go home, because otherwise, I’m there. Everything I know I’ll give to them. They know what makes people tick, Belle.”

Belle nodded. But what the hell makes Magnus Strong tick?
